The fight for a smoke-free world

For a long time to work towards strict regulation against smoking, the heart and Stroke Foundation has played a leading role in the campaigns of public education and advocacy, as well as the establishment partnerships with governments, health officials and non-governmental organizations to strengthen regulations on tobacco control as well as factors such as tobacco smoke, the price, labeling, advertising and sponsorship of tobacco .

The Foundation is the main defender of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, an international treaty for public health unique and in force since February 2005.

With this treaty, 86 nations have so far pledged to develop comprehensive measures of tobacco control, including ending tobacco promotions, ensuring the presence of health-related messages on all tobacco products, to protect the public from secondhand smoke and help smokers quit.

At home, our ongoing commitment to the advancement of national and provincial initiatives to fight against smoking has led some provinces to adopt some of the toughest laws in the world.

In addition, the Foundation of heart disease, as well as other leading health organizations in Canada, intervened successfully in 2005 during a major cause in the courts of Saskatchewan where tobacco companies challenged the regulations prohibiting displays of tobacco. It is currently promoting the most effective tobacco to children and youth.
